Water as Leverage for Resilient Cities Asia
Location : Semarang, Indonesia
Project year : 2018-2019
Association : IDN Liveable Cities (in collaboration with MLA+, FABRICations, Witteveen+Bos, Deltares, Diponegoro University and Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland)
Cascading Semarang is a design proposal that was resulted from Water as Leverage for Resilient Cities Asia program. This program was initiated by Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO). The aim of this program is helping Asian cities to solve water-related issues resulted in the climate change phenomenon. It offers a new paradigm in which water is seen as a “leverage”, that can be useful for the city, instead of a “disaster”. Three pilot cities are chosen for the implementation of this program: Semarang (Indonesia), Chennai (India) and Khulna (Bangladesh). Altogether with other Dutch and Indonesian multidisciplinary experts, I help Semarang city government to develop a design proposal that is not just sustainable but also bankable.

Furthermore, Cascading Semarang offers an integrated water management approach as a strategy to solve flood issues in the city. It integrates the upstream and downstream water management that includes a spatial intervention for each strategy. The concept is translated into five project proposals: Spongy Mountain Terrace, Rechanneling the City, Feeding the Industry, Micro Interventions and Recharging the Aquifers.
